LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell men's lacrosse team defeated a nationally ranked conference opponent for the second week in a row, and for the second straight week junior attackman Will Sands and sophomore goalie Christian Klipstein have been honored. Klipstein repeats as the Corvias Patriot League Goalie of the Week, while Sands was named Fifth Quarter Fresh Bison Athlete of the Week.
On Saturday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium, Bucknell rallied from three goals down at the half to beat No. 17/18 Loyola 9-8 in double overtime. Sands netted the sudden-death game-winner, capping off a two-goal, five-assist afternoon. He also tallied five assists in a mid-week loss at Villanova, and he now ranks second in the country in assists with 33 and fourth in points with 47.
Sands’ 2017 scoring assault keeps him moving up in the Bison record books. With seven on Saturday, he surpassed the 150-point mark in his career, and he jumped past former teammate Sean Doyle into seventh place on the all-time points list with 153. Sands also moved ahead of Todd Streelman into the No. 6 position on Bucknell’s career assists chart with 77.
His 33 assists this season are already tied for sixth-most in Bucknell history, 15 shy of David Dickson's school record set in 2013. Sands has either scored or assisted on 47 of the team's 89 goals this season after having a hand in 7 of 9 on Saturday.
While Sands provided the drama on the offensive end, the Loyola game might never have reached overtime were it not for the stellar play of Klipstein in goal. He made 15 saves, with the biggest of the day coming on Greyhounds All-American Pat Spencer from close range with just over a minute left in regulation.
Klipstein, who also had 14 saves at Villanova, leads the Patriot League in saves per game at 11.9, His .530 save percentage ranks third in the league.
Now 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the Patriot League, the Bison have another tough test at home on Saturday against No. 7/10 Army West Point at 1 p.m. It will be Senior Day at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium, and the game will be televised locally on WQMY-TV as well as online at PatriotLeague.TV.
