LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's lacrosse team is on the cusp of cracking the top 10 in two national polls.
After stunning then No. 3 Yale in overtime, and stretching their winning streak to four games with a rout of Mount St. Mary's, the Bison rose to No. 12 in the USILA Coaches' Poll and to No. 11 in the Inside Lacrosse Maverik Media Listing. Since they returned to both polls on March 26, they have climbed four spots in the Coaches' Poll and seven in the Media Listing.
Last week, Bucknell was slotted 14th in both polls. One of the hottest teams in the country, the Bison are 9-3 (5-1 Patriot League) on the season and winners of six of their past seven games. During that stretch, they toppled three ranked foes in a row in Yale (9-8 OT), then No. 6 Loyola (12-11) and then No. 15/20 Army West Point (10-7).
Bucknell, which is tied for second in the league standings with No. 9/10 Loyola, has already clinched a spot in the 2018 Patriot League Tournament. The Bison, who have one game at hand on league leader No. 18/17 Navy, have now qualified for 11 of the past 12 Patriot League Tournaments, only missing the 2017 edition.
Bucknell has been led by Will Sands, who was named to the Tewaaraton Watch List and honored as a Midseason Third Team All-American by Inside Lacrosse. Sands is on pace to have one of the finest seasons in the program's 50-year history; with 62 points (19g-43a), he stands third in the country and tied for eighth in the Bison annals. His assist total, a new career high, leads the nation by seven and is five shy of the Bucknell record.
Sean O'Brien and Connor O'Hara have also been instrumental to the Bison's success. With 33 goals each, they are tied for fifth in the nation and are four away from cracking the Bucknell top 10 in single-season strikes. In addition, the Bison defense has tightened up over the past seven games, holding all but one of their opponents under 10 goals.
Bucknell is set to host Lafayette in its penultimate game of the regular season on Friday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m.
