CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Bucknell's Sean O'Brien was recognized as the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
O'Brien led the Bison to victories over then No. 3 Yale and Mount St. Mary's, factoring into over half of their goals with 12 points (10g-2a). Against the Bulldogs, he deked around his defender and beat Jack Starr five hole with 1:02 remaining in overtime to lift Bucknell to its second win over a top-10 opponent.
O'Brien's golden goal capped a five-point (4g-1a) outing against one of the nation's stingiest defensive teams. He then exploded for seven points (6g-1a) against the Mount, matching his career high in both goals and points.
Over the course of the two games, O'Brien turned the ball over just once, collected four ground balls and sent 54.2 percent of his shots on target.
On the strength of his 10-goal week, O'Brien was also honored as the Bison Athlete of the Week. He became the second Bison to reach the 30-goal plateau this season, joining Connor O'Hara. Both have a career-best 33 goals, which is four shy of cracking Bucknell's top 10 in single-season strikes.
O'Brien was previously selected as the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week and Bison Athlete of the Week on Feb. 6, 2017 after registering seven points (6g-1a) in Bucknell's 14-13 victory over Delaware in its 2017 opener.
This season, O'Brien is the sixth Bison to capture Patriot League weekly honors. Will Sands is a four-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week while Reed Malas earned that distinction for the first time in his collegiate career last week. In addition, Lukas Munoz and Matt Gilray were both selected as the Defensive Player of the Week while Christian Klipstein garnered Goalkeeper of the Week laurels following Bucknell's win at then No. 18/20 Colgate.
O'Brien is the third men's lacrosse player to be honored as the Bison Athlete of the Week, joining Munoz (March 18) and Sands (March 25).
O'Brien and the Bison, who vaulted to 11th in the Inside Lacrosse Maverik Media Listing and 12th in the USILA Coaches' Poll, host Lafayette on Friday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m.
