LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men’s soccer team gave up just a single goal in 182 minutes of action on opening weekend, and a pair of Bison who were integral in that stellar defensive effort were honored by the Patriot League on Monday. Junior Ryan Ott was named Corvias Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week, while junior center back Tyler Peterson earned Corvias Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Ott earns his first career Player of the Week honor after stopping 14 of the 15 opposing shots on frame in two matches over the weekend. He made five saves in a 1-0 overtime loss to St. Bonaventure on Friday, then he stopped a career-high nine shots in a 1-0 victory over a Saint Francis (Pa.) team that was coming off a four-goal outburst against Duquesne in its 2017 debut.
After apprenticing under standout seniors Mike Lansing and Clarke Fox in 2015, Ott was poised to take over as Bucknell’s starting keeper last season before suffering a preseason injury. He made it back for the last five games, including two strong postseason performances that earned him a spot on the Patriot League All-Tournament Team.
Now Ott boasts a .933 save percentage and a 0.49 goals-against average after two appearances this season.
Peterson is a team co-captain as a junior, and in the first two games of the season he was flanked by a sophomore and two freshmen on a very young back line. Peterson quarterbacked that group to an outstanding start, as the Bison gave up just the single goal on the weekend.
Bucknell brings its 1-1 record on the road for the first time this fall on Sunday when it travels to DeLand, Fla., to take on Stetson on Sunday at noon.
