LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men’s soccer team, seeded third at this week’s Patriot League Tournament, had three players named to the 2017 All-Patriot League Team on Monday. Junior fullback Tyler Peterson, sophomore midfielder Nick King, and freshman forward Matt Thorsheim were all Third Team selections.
An All-Patriot League pick for the first time in his career, Peterson has started all 18 games at center back and is a team captain as a junior. He has played in 97 percent of the team’s minutes this season and has scored one goal, the first of his career, coming on Sept. 19 in a 1-1 tie at Saint Peter’s.
Peterson was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on Aug. 28 after spearheading a strong opening-weekend defensive effort. The Bison allowed only one goal (none in regulation) in a 1-0 OT loss to St. Bonaventure and a 1-0 win over Saint Francis (Pa.). For the season, the Bison defense has given up just 18 goals in 18 games. The team has seven shutouts, including two in a row heading into the postseason.
King and Thorsheim have been two of the team’s top offensive playmakers all season. King has now earned Third Team All-Patriot League honors in each of his first two collegiate seasons. After recording four goals and seven assists as a freshman, he has four goals and two assists this year and is Bucknell’s second-leading scorer.
King’s goals in 2017 have come against Saint Francis (Pa.), Robert Morris, Fairleigh Dickinson and Colgate. He also had assists in back-to-back Patriot League wins over Loyola and American.
Thorsheim is one of five freshmen to earn a spot on one of the three All-Patriot League teams this year, joining Rookie of the Year Chase Vosvick of Loyola and Toti Knutsson, Peter Kargbo and Elias Lampis of Boston University.
A two-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week this fall, Thorsheim leads the Bison in goals (5), assists (4) and points (14). He scored both goals in a critical 2-1 road win over Lehigh on Oct. 25, and he has also found the net against Binghamton, American and Duquesne.
Bucknell has had one four-time All-Patriot League selection, and that was Chris Thorsheim – Matt’s older brother – from 2012-15.
The Bison are 7-7-4 overall and 5-3-1 in the Patriot League. They will host sixth-seeded Colgate in a Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal game on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Emmitt Field.
