ANNAPOLIS, Md. – At the end of the Patriot League Championships' opening night, the Bucknell men's swimming & diving team is fourth with 71 points, one behind Boston University.
The Bison placed third in both the 200 medley relay and the 800 freestyle relay, clocking a pair of top-10 times in the process. In addition, freshman Garrett Sommer scored his first Patriot League points, taking 10th in the 3-meter dive with a score of 236.20.
The 200 medley relay team of Chris Devlin, Chadd Cummings, Jacob Lubinski and Charlie McFarland gave Bucknell early momentum. Their time of 1:29.78 was the second-fastest in school history, a fraction of a second shy of besting the mark set at last year's Patriot League championship meet.
Not to be outdone, the 800 freestyle relay team of Devlin, Vince Filippini, Sam Rutan and Mitch Gavars clocked in at 6:38.27, which was good for sixth in school history. Devlin swam the opening leg of 1:38.25, moving him to third from seventh all-time in the 200 freestyle.
Navy (132) and Army West Point (107) are currently the top two teams. The Patriot League Championships continue tomorrow. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. with the finals following at 6 p.m.
