LEWISBURG, Pa. – Charlie McFarland, Kyle Bloom, and Sam Rutan all won individual events Saturday as Bucknell men’s swimming and diving closed the regular season by hosting the Bison Invite at Kinney Natatorium. In the pool for the final meet before the Patriot League Championships, the Bison swimmers didn’t compete in their primary events during the unscored invitational.

Bucknell was joined at the meet by American, Lafayette, Seton Hall, and Shippensburg.

McFarland took first in a field of 22 swimmers in the 200 free, touching the wall in 1:44.52 to edge Seton Hall’s Cody Wimmer (1:44.97). McFarland’s teammate, Will Kinsella, was fifth.

Bloom took the title in the 50 free, besting 14 other swimmers with his time of 21.97. Another Seton Hall swimmer, Tyler Kauth, was the runner-up, while Bucknell’s James Elmendorf took fifth.

Rutan’s first-place finish came in an exciting race in the 200 back. He won with a time of 1:58.23, edging Seton Hall’s Michael Mattera, who clocked in right behind him at 1:58.39.

Matt McGoey was in another close race with a Seton Hall swimmer, finishing just three one-hundredths of a second behind Noah Yanchulis in the 400 IM. Yanchulis was the Most Outstanding Swimmer at the 2016 Big East Championships.

Additional runner-up finishes for the Bison included Chris Devlin (500 free) and Vince Filippini (100 free). Devlin’s time was the third fastest in the event by any Bison swimmer this season.

Rutan (200 IM), McGoey (200 fly), and Jack Robinson (100 fly) all added third-place showings at the meet.

Representing the Bucknell divers, Peter Sigward recorded personal-best times on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.

Bucknell will host the Patriot League Championships at Kinney Natatorium on Feb. 15-18.
