LEWISBURG, Pa. – For the second time this year, Bucknell sophomore Matthew Fay has been named Fifth Quarter Fresh Bison Athlete of the Week, following a strong performance at the NCAA East Preliminary Meet.
Qualifying for the NCAA East Preliminary Meet for the first time in his career, Fay finished 21st, clearing 16-10 3/4, breaking his own school record. The sophomore qualified for the meet with a mark of 16-9 1/4, 28th in the region, which he recorded at the Bucknell Team Challenge and IC4A Championships, breaking Dave Pomfret's 17 year-old record of 16-3.
His performance capped off an impressive sophomore season, as Fay received All-Patriot League and All-East recognition in the event.
Fay was one of nine Bison to qualify for the regional meet. Joining Fay on the trip to Lexington, Kentucky, included Colleen Buckley (5,000-meter), Christine Bendzinski (1,500m), Sarah Chandler (steeplechase), Luke Giugliano (10,000m), Nicholas Lombardo (long jump), Meg Sangimino (javelin), Rebecca Skovira (javelin) and Kate Scott (10,000m).
On the men's side, it was the 10th consecutive year that Bucknell has earned at least one NCAA Regional qualifier and the fourth straight season with at least three. On the women's side, the Bison qualifying six tied a school record, joining the 2007 squad.
