WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - UMBC's women's tennis team may have liked come out of the match with a "W", but the Bison put up a great fight and pulled off a 4-3 upset on Saturday, March 4, at the West Branch Racquet Club in Williamsport, Pa. With the match tied at three points a piece, senior Chelsea Mills (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) battled from behind and won her set at the No. 2 singles position and handed her team the victory, evening out the all-time series with UMBC to 5-5.

"We won this match of shear fight," said head coach Rebecca Helt. "On paper, UMBC looked like the better team, but we played hard and battled our way back."

In doubles play, only one Orange and Blue pair was victorious; sophomore Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.U./Half Hollow Hills East) and freshman JoAnna Grossman (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) in the No. 3 spot. The duo downed Emily Portner and Debora Lin, 8-0.

In singles play, freshman Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates) defeated Joy Adewumi in the No. 3 position, 6-2, 6-2, while Baffa won her set over Portner 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 5. Grossman, in No. 6, defeated Lin 6-1, 6-0.

With UMBC having the doubles point and two singles points (Bucknell with three singles points), Mills was in the pressure position. She dropped a quick first game to Cornelia Carapcea, 2-6, in No. 2, but refused to lose, and came back and dominated over her opponent, 6-3, 6-4.

The Bison now post a 2006 dual-match record of 2-1. Bucknell will return to action on Tuesday, March 14 when it battles the College of Charleston while on the spring break trip to South Carolina. The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
