POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Bison women's tennis team defeated Marist, 5-2, on Friday, March 31, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Bucknell made a strong showing by sweeping all of the doubles action and earning the lone doubles point.
Freshman Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown) opened singles play on a winning note as she defeated Megan Gureck, in the No. 4 position, 6-1, 6-1. With Bucknell senior Veronica Brown (Derwood, Nd./Col. Zadok Magruder) and freshman JoAnna Grossman (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) falling in the No. 1 and No. 5 position, respectively, the next singles point was grabbed by freshman Camille Simonetti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), in three sets at the No. 6 position, over Emily Zampello, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3.
With the possibility to win the match for the Bison, it was who else but senior Chelsea Mills (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) playing in the clutch. Mills handled the pressure well as she dominated over Yana Tikhonko in the No. 2, 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates) finished last, at the No. 3 position, and also earned a win, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The match opened with doubles play, where all three squads took home W's. The team of Brown and Gamboa was in the No. 1 position, winning 8-5, while Mills, partnered with sophomore Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East), won at the No. 2 spot, 8-4. Globerman and Grossman closed out the doubles line-up at the No. 3 slot, turning in an 8-4 victory.
The women will return to action on Saturday, April 1, in West Point, N.Y., to battle Army in a Patriot League contest. The match is scheduled for 10 a.m.
