LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Bucknell senior co-captains Annie Gilbertson and Maddy Molinari were honored Monday after turning in terrific performances in a 2-0 week for the Bison women's lacrosse team. Molinari was named the Corvias Patriot League Midfielder of the Week for the second time in 2017, while Gilbertson received the Corvias Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week and the Fifth Quarter Fresh Bison Athlete of the Week awards.
The Bison improved to 4-1 on the season after a 14-10 road victory over Monmouth and a 16-6 rout of Wagner at home last week. Gilbertson and Molinari played significant roles in both games.
Against Monmouth, Molinari scored three goals and led all players with eight draw controls. She then added five more goals to set a new career high, along with seven draw controls in the win over Wagner.
Molinari now leads the team with 13 goals and 30 draw controls in five games this season. Her 30 DCs also lead the Patriot League and rank 13th nationally. Now with 129 career points, Molinari moved into a tie for 10th on Bucknell’s all-time scoring list.
Gilbertson, a standout defender for the Bison, just missed a school record when she picked up seven ground balls against Monmouth. Three days later she did etch her name into the record book when she forced eight turnovers in a dominant performance against Wagner.
Gilbertson now has 16 caused turnovers on the season, the most in the Patriot League and seventh-most in the country.
Gilbertson’s eight caused turnovers were two better than the previous team record of six, set by Lauren Deitrich against Robert Morris in 2007 and by Katelyn Miller against George Washington in 2012. Gilbertson now has 63 career caused turnovers, sixth-most in Bucknell history.
At 4-1 on the season, the Bison are off to their best start since 2009. Next up is a home game against Manhattan on Sunday.
