WASHINGTON, D.C. – Audrey Walsh scored four goals, and Elizabeth Duswalt came off the bench to record eight second-half saves to lift the Bucknell women’s lacrosse team to a 9-8 Patriot League victory over host American on Saturday afternoon. The Bison moved to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot League, with all three conference wins coming on the road.
Maddy Molinari logged her 29th and 30th goals of the year to go with four draw controls, and Eve Lukowski tallied a goal and two assists in her return to the lineup after a five-game injury absence. Courtney Burke and Morgan Steinhacker also scored goals, and Christina Manis passed out a pair of assists to help the Bison improve to 5-1 on the road this season.
It was a 2-2 game just over 12 minutes in, when Walsh scored three straight goals to give the Bison lead for good. She finished feeds from Manis and Lukowski, and then scored unassisted to give Bucknell a 5-2 advantage.
Madison Hoon got one back for American, but the Bison finished the half with three goals in the final 4:48, including two in the last minute, to take an 8-3 lead into the locker room. Steinhacker’s shorthanded goal started the run. Walsh scored on a free-position shot with 51 seconds left, and then Burke hit the net from the 8-meter arc with just four seconds remaining to make it a five-goal game at the break.
The second half was all American, however. The Eagles outshot Bucknell 18-4 in the period, but Duswalt stood tall in goal with eight saves. The Bison were whistled for 20 fouls in the second half alone, leading to 10 free-position attempts, but American could only finish two of them.
After the Eagles (2-10, 3-2) scored the first two goals of the second stanza, Lukowski finished a Becca Golding feed for Bucknell’s second man-down goal of the game and a 9-5 lead. American made things interesting with three goals in the final 3:22. The last of those came with just 0:03 left in the game, which did not leave the hosts enough time to play for an equalizer.
Sarah Bootman led American with four goals and an assist, while Jennifer DeSimone picked up a goal and three assists.
With her two assists, Manis reached the 30-assist mark for the second straight year, and she upped her Bucknell career record to 89. Her 30 assists in 2017 are fourth-most on Bucknell’s single-season list.
The Bison remained in a tie for fifth place in the Patriot League at 3-2. They will host Colgate next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Graham Field.
