Brian Barron netted three goals for the second consecutive game and four other Bison found the back of the net two times apiece as the No. 18 Bucknell men's water polo team defeated Fordham, 16-13, to close out the season-opening Navy Open Sunday with a 3-1 record. Barron, whose twin brother is a sophomore driver on the Rams, also tallied three goals in the first game of the day, a 15-14 loss to Queens.

No. 24 Rutgers broke open a scoreless match with three goals in the final 25 minutes, spoiling a determined effort by the Bucknell women's soccer team on a pleasant Sunday afternoon at Emmitt Field. Ashley Jones scored the game-winner in the 66th minute to help the Scarlet Knights improve to 4-1, while the Bison fell to 1-4 against a tough early season schedule.

Field Hockey. Bucknell Field Hockey Takes 7-0 Loss at No. 4 Princeton

Bucknell field hockey ran up against one of the toughest teams in the country in No. 4 Princeton Sunday afternoon, falling 7-0 at the Class of '52 Stadium. The Tigers' Kathleen Sharkey posted a hat trick to lead Princeton to a victory in its home opener.

Richie Hyden scored a team-high five goals and dished out two assists, but it was not enough offense as the No. 18 Bucknell men's water polo team suffered its first loss of the young season Sunday morning at the Navy Open against Queens (N.Y.), dropping a 15-14 decision. The Knights registered six goals in the first quarter, equaling the number of first-half goals the Bison yielded in two games Saturday.

Bucknell volleyball rebounded from a 3-1 loss to Iona to claim its first win of the season in a thrilling five-set match against Providence in the finale of the Bucknell Invitational Saturday night. Several Bison recorded career highs in the last match of the night at Davis Gym, including Kyleigh McAhren, who posted a team-best 18 kills, while Heidi Kamp was named to her second consecutive All-Tournament Team.

Football. Bucknell Football Comes Up Short in Opener, Falls 17-13 at Duquesne

Sophomore running back Tyler Smith returned a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter, but it was the lone touchdown for Bucknell as the Bison football team lost a hard-fought season opener at Duquesne, 17-13, Saturday evening at breezy Arthur J. Rooney Field. Bucknell freshman quarterback Brandon Wesley rushed 19 times for 48 yards and completed 12 of 21 passes for 81 yards in a reserve role.

The Bucknell men's water polo team opened its 2010 campaign with plenty of offense on Saturday at the Navy Open. The Bison commenced the day with an 18-6 victory over Vanguard and then followed that with a 22-3 triumph against Gannon. A total of thirteen different players netted goals for Bucknell on the day, led by six apiece by Spencer Richley and Richie Hyden.

M. Cross Country. Bison Cross Country Teams Dominate at Season Opener

The Bucknell men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2010 seasons on a cool, breezy morning at the West Fields, and both Bison squads dominated the non-scored meet. Freshman Chris Sacks won the men's race, while junior Stephanie Fulmer took first for the women. The women's team swept the top eight places, while the men took seven of the top eight and 10 of the top 12 spots.

W. Soccer. Duquesne Holds off Bison Charge for 2-1 Women's Soccer Win

Trailing 2-1 midway through the second half, the Bucknell women's soccer team lobbed an all-out assault on the Duquesne goal but just could not get one past Dukes keeper Gabby Morrin, and the Bison dropped their home opener by that score on a warm, muggy night at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. Christa Matlack scored Bucknell's goal in the 22nd minute, but Lauren Ott answered with the go-ahead tally less than five minutes later to help Duquesne improve to 2-2-1.

Seniors Ross Liberati and Tommy McCabe had a hand in all three second-half goals to help the Bison men's soccer team storm past La Salle Friday night, 3-1 at McCarthy Stadium. Liberati had two goals and an assist, while McCabe fell one shy of the Bucknell single-game record with three assists as the Bison responded well after a tough overtime game against Villanova just 48 hours earlier.

Every year since 1994 the Bucknell men's water polo team has opened its season at the Navy Open. The 2010 campaign is no exception as the Bison will take on Vanguard, Gannon, Queens and Fordham in Annapolis, Md., this weekend to commence its 34th season of varsity competition.

Bucknell field hockey will play its first home contest of the 2010 season, welcoming Albany to Graham Field on Saturday. The Bison will then continue their weekend schedule with a tough road matchup at No. 4 Princeton on Sunday. Both games are slated for 1 p.m.
