Bucknell Women's Rowing Wins Overall Points Trophy at Murphy Cup
March 29, 2008 PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Schuylkill River) - Eclipsing its best-ever showing at the Murphy Cup, the Bucknell women's rowing team advanced six boats to the finals on Saturday and had four earn first-place finishes as the Bison won the overall points trophy at the competitive event. Bucknell's varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice four and lightweight varsity four all won their heats as well as their finals races. The novice eight and varsity four both posted victories in their heats and then went on to finish in the top-three in the finals. The four winning boats for the Bison each won their finals race by at least two seconds, with the varsity eight's 6.64 second margin over second-place Williams the largest of the day. The second varsity eight nearly matched the varsity eight, defeating second-place Williams-A by 6.50 seconds. Bucknell routinely finished ahead of its Patriot League competition on Saturday. In the varsity eight, Navy finished two spots behind the Bison, while Navy, Colgate and Lehigh were fourth, fifth and sixth in the second varsity eight that was won by Bucknell. The novice four featured the Bison on top with Lehigh in third, while the lightweight varsity four was first with Lafayette in sixth. Despite finishing second, the novice eight placed ahead of a pair of Navy boats. Bucknell's strong showing marks the second consecutive year it has won the overall points trophy at the Murphy Cup. Last year the Bison claimed a then-program record three victories in the finals at the Murphy Cup. "It was a great job by our entire team today," said Bison head coach Stephen Kish. "Everybody stayed focused as we progressed through the heats and into the finals." Bucknell will now set its sights on its first home event of the season as it hosts Buffalo next Saturday, April 5, on the Susquehanna River. The next day the Bison will travel to Fairfax, Va., to compete against Dayton, Georgetown, George Washington and MIT.
