Bucknell's Second Varsity Eight Wins Gold at Knecht Cup
April 15, 2012
CHERRY HILL, N.J. (Cooper River) -The Bucknell women's rowing team had three varsity boats finish in the top two in their respective finals Sunday on the final day of competition at the Knecht Cup. The second varsity eight claimed gold in its Grand Final, while the varsity eight and lightweight eight each placed second. Additionally, the freshman eight won its petite final, while the freshman four was second in its petite final.
Five Bucknell boats were in action on Sunday and four of the races had exciting finishes with first and second being decided by less than three seconds.
The second varsity eight won at the Knecht Cup for the first time in program history as it edged out second-place Duke by less than a second.
The varsity eight also came down to the wire with Duke, a squad that recently won the San Diego Crew Classic. The Blue Devils edged out the Bison by 1.29 seconds for the gold medal as the two crews were both nearly 10 seconds ahead of third-place Buffalo.
The lightweight eight earned an impressive silver medal as it finished ahead of Princeton for the second straight week. Prior to last Saturday, the Bison had never finished ahead of the Tigers in a regular-season race. Making it even more impressive, Bucknell defeated Princeton by 3.21 seconds last week and more than nine seconds on Sunday. The Bison finished less than three seconds behind first-place Wisconsin, one of their closest results against the Badgers in recent years.
Bucknell will be idle next weekend as it prepares for a busy April 28-29 weekend that includes the Patriot League Championships, Mid-Atlantic Rowing Championship and the Class of 2012 Cup vs. Georgetown.
