WORCESTER, Mass. (Lake Quinsigamond) - Behind finals victories from the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four, the Bucknell women's rowing team claimed the overall points crown Saturday at the ECAC Metro Championship on Lake Quinsigamond. The Bison finished with 72 points, 16 ahead of Buffalo, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, which all tied for second with 56. The varsity eight, which was named Boat of the Year at last week's Patriot League Championship, won its heat by more than three seconds over Buffalo. The varsity four of Lauren Yee (coxswain), Gillian Carter (stroke), Erin Henry (3), Elizabeth Regan (2) and Susan Shadle (bow) helped the Bison to a sweep of the same three races they did at last week's Patriot League Championship. Like their varsity eight and second varsity eight teammates, the varsity four easily defeated second-place Buffalo in the heat. Then, Bucknell beat out Colgate in the grand final, winning with a time of 7:35.817. The Raiders were second in 7:39.84. Bucknell also entered third varsity eight and novice eight boats into the ECAC Metro Championships. The boats did not win their respective finals, but still had strong showings. The third varsity eight took fifth in the second varsity eight heat, but then placed second to Delaware in the petite final with a time of 7:33.998. The Bison third varsity eight consisted of Lauren Lesko (coxswain), Jessica Glenn (stroke), Amanda Gallina (7), Beth Mooney (6), Cara Cox-Steiner (5), Kate Courtien (4), Sara Baughn (3), Jen Butler (2) and Amy VanNostrand (bow). The six boats were all within 8.5 seconds of each other. The Bison crossed the finish line in 7:10.187, while Buffalo won in 7:01.738. The ECAC Metro Championship marked the conclusion of the season for the majority of the Bison squad. The varsity lightweight eight will still compete at the IRA National Championships on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J., the first weekend in June.
