GOLD RIVER, Calif. (Lake Natoma) – The Bucknell women’s rowing lightweight eight posted the second-best finish in program history at the IRA National Championship Regatta on Saturday. The Bison, who won the title in 2007, placed second in a six-boat field to defending national champion Wisconsin, finishing in a time of 7 minutes, 7.71 seconds.

The Bison, who advanced to their fourth consecutive Grand Final at the IRA National Championships with a second-place showing in their heat on Friday, edged out third-place Stanford by just over two-tenths of a second for the runner-up trophy. Stanford had won Friday’s heat over Bucknell by nearly two seconds to earn a spot in the Grand Final.

The six-boat Grand Final field was the same for the third consecutive year as Radcliffe, Georgetown and Princeton rounded out the standings. Last year’s results featured the following finishing order: Wisconsin, Georgetown, Stanford, Bucknell, Princeton and Radcliffe.

The Bison have had success at the IRA National Championships in recent years as they finished sixth in 2006, first in 2007 and fourth in 2008. The victory in 2007 marked the only national championship in school history.
