Almost 200 rowers from collegiate programs, including Penn State, Allegheny College, Susquehanna University and West Virginia University, competed. They were joined by members of the Central Pennsylvania Rowing Association, Bucknell parents and Bucknell alumni. The Erg Armageddon featured openweight and lightweight events for both men and women at the 2,000-meter distance as well as 500-meter dashes and mixed doubles events. In addition, coxswains, master's men and women (all rowers over the age of 27) and Bucknell rowing alumni rowed in designated events. During racing, competitors and spectators were able to follow along by watching a large screen on the wall of Davis Gym, which showed a projection of the racing. Bucknell rowers, who all competed as unaffiliated athletes, won four events. Devon Mitchell, Whittney Henry, Meghan Murphy and Katherine Brewster-Duffy were the four Bison to post victories. Mitchell won the novice lightweight event in 7 minutes, 45.4 seconds, while Henry claimed the varsity lightweight event in 7:33.6. Murphy was victorious along with Bucknell men's rower George Rockett in the novice mixed doubles event, posting a time of 3:18.6, good enough to stand as the new event record by over two seconds. In the varsity mixed double, Brewster-Duffy paired up with Bucknell men's rower Frank Rosenthal for another record-breaking performance of 3:17.7, less than a second faster than the previous record. In the master's events, Bucknell parents were out in force. In the men's event, Paul Mitchell, father of Bison freshman Devon Mitchell, took first by almost six seconds with a time of 3:06.8. He was joined in the event by four other Bucknell fathers: Tom Mooney, Bob Kannor, Dick Trayes and Ed Henkler. The Mitchell family just missed a gold medal sweep, with Joyce Mitchell placing second in 4:06.8 in the women's event. She was followed by Diane Henkler, another Bucknell, mom in 4:47.1. Bucknell opens its 2007 spring season with its spring training trip March 9-17. The Bison will compete at the Murphy Cup in Philadelphia, Pa., March 24, marking the first time they will be in the Northeast this spring.
