If I were to sum up our spring season, the word that comes to mind is challenging. Once one obstacle was conquered, it seemed as if another hurdle only presented itself. Lining up against the top two lightweight crews in the nation was certainly a significant challenge. Since our boat was so young, racing crews of this caliber provided the opportunity for valuable learning experiences. Sure, they were rough races, but competing against these faster crews only fueled everyone's desire to gain speed and to grow as a unit.

Throughout the entire season, the drive and determination of the rowers were unwavering. It was our perseverance that made this boat so special. Win or lose, everyone realized that their hard work paid them back in more ways than they ever thought imaginable. We learned to trust each other, knowing that if we worked hard on a daily basis, we would progress and take steps forward.

A week after the rest of the team had gone home for the summer, we knew that it was our time to shine. You could sense the excitement within the hull during practice the week leading up to the Dad Vail. Our minds were set on the gold, and we were going to do it together, as one. We remained calm and composed after competing in Friday's time trial. Although our performance on Friday was certainly not our best, we did not let the results or less than stellar conditions distract us from our goal.

Warming up for the final on Saturday, I could sense everyone's commitment to one another. We went through a lot together throughout the entire spring season and were there through the good and the bad. Since the Dad Vail final was our culminating race, it was our chance to make a statement and to show all of the hard work that we had put in throughout the year. It was a huge honor to win the Dad Vail, a regatta rich in tradition. I will remember the medals dock and the trophy, but more importantly, I will remember my teammates and our shared experiences. Because it took so much effort, patience, and care to "grow" this boat, the end result, a Dad Vail gold, was that much more rewarding.
