Bucknell Baseball Swept in Doubleheader at Virginia, 7-0 & 6-1
Feb. 21, 2009
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Continuing its opening weekend four-game set at Virginia on Saturday, the Bucknell baseball team dropped a pair of contests to the Cavaliers on Saturday afternoon, losing 7-0 and 6-1 at Davenport Field. An RBI triple by Andrew Brouse (Kreamer, Pa./Midd-West) in the first inning of game two gave Bucknell (0-3) its first lead of the young season and its only run in the doubleheader. Virginia (3-0) totaled 12 hits in game one and 10 more in game two. Steven Proscia, who belted a three-run home run in the middle of a six-run fourth inning in game two, was 4-for-8 on the day with four runs batted in. Ben Allen (Port Royal, Pa./Juniata) was 2-for-4 in each game for the Bison. All four of his hits were singles and he scored on Brouse's triple in game two. Bucknell's bullpen was solid in each game as Daniel Hart (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) and Russell Seidell (Granville, Ohio/Granville) limited the Cavaliers to two runs on three hits in 3.2 innings of work in game one. In fact, Seidell retired all seven hitters he faced. In game two, Chris Yamaguchi (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South) and Matt Lamore (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) yielded just three hits and no runs in 4.1 innings of relief. Both Bucknell and Virginia committed two errors in each game. The four combined errors for the Bison led to just one unearned run in game one.
Starter Danny Hultzen, Will Roberts and Kevin Arico combined on the shutout for the Cavaliers in game one. Hultzen scattered six hits in his six innings of work, while Roberts and Arico limited the Bison to just one hit over the final three frames. The lone hit during that time was a single up the middle by Allen, while all seven Bucknell hits in the game came from the top six hitters in the lineup as each had at least one hit.
Neal Davis, Robert Pourtier and Tyler Wilson combined on the three-hitter in game two for Virginia. Bucknell and Virginia will complete their four-game series with a single contest Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. |
