Bucknell Baseball Edged by Eastern Kentucky, 3-2
Feb. 24, 2008
RICHMOND, Ky. - The Bucknell baseball team was edged, 3-2, by Eastern Kentucky on Sunday in a snow-shortened game that was called in the middle of the seventh. With the loss, the Bison are now 0-2-1 on the year, while the Colonels improve to 1-0-1. Eastern Kentucky began the scoring with a run in the second inning. Jayson Langfels drove a one-out triple to centerfield and scored on an error on the play. After being held hitless through four, Bucknell managed to get on the board in the top of the fifth. Reliever Patrick Cooper gave up back-to-back walks to sophomore John Avanzino (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) and junior Zachary Brown (Stroudsburg, Pa./Notre Dame) with one out. The next Bison batter, senior Ed Rubbo (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) broke up the no-hitter with a single to center to drive home Avanzino, while Brown scored on an error. The Colonels promptly tied the score at two in the bottom half of the frame. Eryk Dees led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice and came in on an RBI single by Tyler Barnett. Then in the sixth, Eastern Kentucky added what would be the winning run in the contest. With two away, Clint Seymour was hit by a pitch and later crossed the plate on an error. That would be all as the Bison tallied just one more hit in the contest, a one-out single by Avanzino in the seventh. Play was then halted before the bottom half of the inning began.
Junior Andy Campbell (Mill Valley, Calif./Marin Catholic) started for the Bison and went five innings, allowing two runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Freshman Eric Jarrett (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) relieved him and took the loss (0-1) despite giving up just one unearned run and no hits in one inning of work.
Colonel's starter Colby Brown worked four innings without surrendering a run or a hit as he walked one and struck out three. Cooper pitched three innings and picked up the win (1-0), allowing two runs, one earned on two hits with two walks and one strikeout. Avanzino and Rubbo contributed the hits for the Orange and Blue with one apiece, while Rubbo registered an RBI. Five different players finished with one hit each for Eastern Kentucky and Barnett drove in one run. Bucknell will be back on the road next weekend beginning with a game at Richmond on Friday, Feb. 29, at 2:30 p.m. |
