PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Junior Austin Turban (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) knocked in the game-winning run with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to help the Bucknell baseball team complete its doubleheader sweep of Cornell at La Salle's Hank DeVincent Field on Saturday. The Bison took game one, 1-0, and picked up a 2-1 victory in game two to move to 2-4 on the season, while the Big Red fall to 0-2.

In the first contest of the day, the Orange and Blue jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning after senior Ryan Gryskevicz (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) belted a triple and scored on an RBI single by junior Ed Rubbo (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge). The pair combined for all of Bucknell's hits in game one as Gryskevicz went 2-for-3 at the plate and Rubbo was 1-for-2.

That would be all the offense the Bison would need, however, as junior Mathew Wilson (Toronto, Ontario/Northern S.S.) tossed a complete-game shutout, scattering five hits with no walks and six strikeouts to earn the victory (1-1). Jim Hyland pitched all six innings for Cornell and allowed one run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts and took the loss (0-1).

Then in game two, Bucknell struck early once again. In the bottom of the first, sophomore Dane Grandizio (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and came home on a passed ball.

The Big Red managed to tie the score at one in the top of the sixth. Scott Hardinger reached with a walk and Domenic Di Riccio followed and drove him in with an RBI double.

In the bottom of the ninth, freshman Ben Yoder (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley) knocked an infield single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and went to third on a ground out. With one out and the bases loaded after two intentional walks, Turban came to the plate and drove in Yoder, who hit 2-for-4 in game two, for the winning run.

Junior Jason Buursma (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School) relieved starter senior Nathan Mittag (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) with one out in the eighth and threw the remaining 1.2 innings scoreless, allowing one hit with one strikeout and no walks to pick up the win (1-0). Mittag surrendered one run on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts through the first 7.1 innings. Walker Toma suffered the setback (0-1) for Cornell, working one-third of an inning on the mound and allowing one run on two hits with two walks and no strikeouts. Tony Bertucci, the starter for the Big Red, worked the first eight innings and gave up one unearned run on four hits, while striking out four and walking none.

Both teams will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 4, with the third and fourth games of the weekend series, beginning at noon on La Salle's Hank DeVincent Field.
