Season-High 19 Hits for Bucknell Baseball in 18-3 Win at Elon
March 5, 2010
ELON, N.C. - Andrew Brouse (Kreamer, Pa./Midd-West) homered for the second consecutive game and drove in five of his career-high six RBIs in an eight-run fifth inning as the Bucknell baseball team registered season highs in runs (18) and hits (19) en route to an 18-3 victory at Elon Friday afternoon. It was the fourth straight win for the Bison, who evened their record at 4-4 on the season.
Every hitter in the Bucknell starting lineup had a hit by the sixth inning and eight of the nine starters drove in at least one run, led by Brouse's six RBIs. Brouse, who was 3-for-6, was one of three Bison to register three hits in the contest, while six Bucknell players posted multi-hit outings.
In addition to its strong offensive attack, Bucknell received solid pitching performances from starter Trey Frahler (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) and reliever Michael Dallanegra (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River). Frahler posted a career-high nine strikeouts, scattered seven hits and yielded three earned runs in six innings of work as he picked up his first win of the season. Dallanegra pitched the final three innings and allowed just one Phoenix baserunner as he picked up his first career save. The three scoreless innings by Dallanegra brought the Bison bullpen ERA down to 3.64 this season.
Bucknell, which capitalized on five Elon (4-4) errors that led to four unearned runs, actually trailed 3-2 as the Phoenix tallied single runs in each of the first three innings. However, the Bison retook the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth and then blew the game open with the eight-run fifth inning.
The first seven hitters in the Bucknell fifth reached base with the big blows being a Brouse three-run home run, a Doug Shribman (Marblehead, Mass./Belmont Hill) two-run homer two batters later and a Brouse two-run single. Overall, Bucknell sent 12 men to the plate in the inning, registered six hits and was the beneficiary of a pair of Elon errors.
A leadoff walk by Shribman to start the sixth inning followed by Scott Reed's (Reston, Va./South Lakes) first career home run made the score 14-3. An RBI single by Ben Allen (Port Royal, Pa./Juniata) and a two-out run-scoring single by Brouse extended the lead to 16-3 as the Bison batted around for a second consecutive inning.
Bucknell added two more runs in the eighth with Gerald Runyan (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) scoring on an error and B.J. LaRosa (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) knocking in Allen with a single. Overall, the Bison scored in five different innings, registering multiple runs each time.
Bucknell's initial runs came in the top of the first inning. After back-to-back singles by Ben Yoder (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley) and LaRosa, Drew Constable (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) drove them home with a two-out single. It marked the seventh time in eight games this season the Bison scored in the top of the first inning. They have scored first in all eight contests.
Thanks to his 3-for-5 day with three runs scored, Yoder extended his hitting streak to seven games. LaRosa, who was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and is now hitting a team-best .536, and Shribman, who hit his seventh career home run, also extended their hitting streaks to seven.
The middle third of the Bison lineup (LaRosa, Brouse, Constable) accounted for eight hits, five runs scored and nine RBIs.
Thanks to his two home runs this year, Brouse is now just one shy of 10th place on the Bucknell career list. He has tallied 15 round-trippers in his four-year career, including a team-high 10 last year. He is also now two RBIs shy of 10th place in program history with 90.
Elon used four pitchers in the game. Starter Jimmy Reyes fell to 1-2 as he gave up nine hits and the first nine runs in his 4.0+ innings of work. Neal Pritchard and Ryan Adams each had two hits for the Phoenix, while Matt Hinson hit a solo home run off Frahler in the third.
The Bison will continue their three-game weekend Saturday night at 7 p.m. against Radford in Elon, N.C.
