Bison Drop 5-3 Decision At Temple In Tenth Inning
March 18, 2003
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Al Roach hit a two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Temple to a 5-3 victory over Bucknell Tuesday. The Bison tallied four hits, including a clutch home run hit by Brian Hirschberg. The Orange and Blue drop to 4-4, while the Owls stand at 1-10. Junior designated hitter Pete Wolf singled home team member Sam Moss with the game's first run in the opening inning to give the Bison a quick 1-0 lead. However, the Bison were unable to hold the Owls from scoring in the bottom half of the frame. Temple plated three runs on just one hit, taking advantage of a Bucknell error. The Orange and Blue rallied in the fourth inning when sophomore Brian Day hit a double down the right field line with two outs. Hirschberg then stepped in and belted a home run over right-centerfield wall to tie the game at three. In the sixth, junior Cory Nadler replaced starter Kevin Burns on the mound for the Bison. Burns gave up five hits and three runs, just one of which was earned, in five innings of work. Bucknell managed a base runner in the 10th but could not score. In the bottom of the first extra frame, Nadler walked Rob Cucinotta setting up Roach's game-winning round tripper to left field to win the game, 5-3. Nadler (0-1) was the tough-luck loser, allowing two runs off of one hit in 4.1 innings.
Bucknell will face Bloomsburg on Saturday, March 22, in a doubleheader that this week was moved to Lewisburg, Pa. The Bison will also play Sunday, March 23, hosting Lock Haven. Both doubleheaders are scheduled to start at noon.
