Bucknell Baseball Drops 8-3 Decision at Maryland
April 4, 2012
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Bob Donato was 3-for-5 and Gerry Runyan was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, but Maryland scored five runs in the third inning and led 8-0 after seven innings as the Bucknell baseball team lost to the Terrapins by an 8-3 margin Wednesday evening at Shipley Field at Bob "Turtle" Smith Field. It was the sixth game in the last five days for the Bison, who fell to 14-15. Maryland improved to 19-12 on the season. Tomo Delp hit a three-run home run and Jordan Hagel posted an RBI single to key that five-run third inning for the Terrapins, who also scored single runs in the second, fourth and seventh innings. Maryland posted 11 hits in the contest with Alfredo Rodriguez (4-for-4), Kyle Convissar (2-for-3) and kJ Hockaday (2-for-5) combining for eight. Maryland scored seven runs against Bison starter Russell Seidell (2-1), who entered the contest with a 3.00 ERA on the season. The lefty yielded eight hits and two walks while striking out one in four innings of work. Bucknell relievers Marcus Garone (2.0 IP), Jordan Holtz (1.0 IP) and Alex Cillo (1.0 IP) were solid. The Terrapins registered just three hits and one run against the trio. Garone and Cillo both posted two strikeouts.
The Bison collected six hits in the game and five came off the bats of Donato and Runyan. Two of Donato's three hits were doubles as he took over the team lead from Runyan with 12 on the year. A single by Brett Ashley in the ninth rounded out the list of hits for Bucknell.
Maryland starter Sander Beck (4-1) and reliever Jamie Pashuck did not allow a Bison player to reach third base during the first seven innings. In fact, over that span, Bucknell baserunners reached second base just twice. However, the Bison finally broke through in the eighth, capitalizing on a leadoff walk by Ashley. Donato followed Ashley's leadoff walk with his second double. A ground out by Carter Bumgardner allowed Ashley to score and after a walk by David Duffett, Runyan's two-out single drove home fellow seniors Donato and Duffett, who had advanced into scoring position on a passed ball. Bucknell, which is 6-4 on the road this season, returns home for a four-game Patriot League series against Navy this weekend. Doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday begin at noon at Depew Field. The Bison are in a stretch where they play 15 of 17 on their home field. |
