Bucknell's Mathew Wilson Named to Tallahassee All-Regional Team
June 3, 2008
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Following his impressive six-hit shutout of Florida State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Bucknell senior pitcher Mathew Wilson (Toronto, Ontario/Northern S.S.) was named to the Tallahassee All-Regional Team. A unanimous selection, Wilson was the lone Bison player to be honored with a position on the all-regional squad, which was announced at the completion of regional play Monday night. Wilson, who improved to 6-1 with last Friday's victory over the No. 4 national seed Seminoles, hurled his Bucknell record-breaking fifth career shutout, including his first one that last nine innings, as Bucknell stunned Florida State by a 7-0 score. Wilson walked two and struck out three as he helped the Bison to their 30th win of the season and ended the Seminoles' 15-game winning streak in opening round NCAA Regional games. Wilson was the lone unanimous selection not from Florida State, which defeated Tulane 16-7 Monday night to advance to this coming weekend's NCAA Super Regional. The Seminoles had seven selections to the 11-player all-regional team, while Tulane had a pair. Florida and Bucknell had one apiece. A team co-captain, Wilson was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection this year. He finished his career with a 13-8 record and 156 strikeouts. His 73 strikeouts this spring were a career high and he narrowly missed breaking the Bison single-season record for strikeouts per nine innings. A member of the Academic All-District II First Team, Wilson was named to the preseason watch lists for the Brooks Wallace Player of the Year and the Roger Clemens Award. He was also on of 30 initial candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. Following the upset of Florida State, Bucknell lost to Tulane (4-1) and Florida State (24-9) to conclude play in the NCAA Tournament. The Bison, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2003, finished the season with a 30-24-2 record.
