LEWISBURG, Pa. - A league-high 19 student-athletes from the Bucknell baseball squad were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, the league office announced on Wednesday. The Bison total comprised nearly one-third of the list of 61 individuals, while Lafayette was second with 15 members. To be eligible for the Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average in the spring semester and be awarded a varsity letter. Headlining the Bison list were recent-graduate Mathew Wilson (Toronto, Ontario/Northern S.S.), and rising-juniors Ben Allen (Port Royal, Pa./Juniata) and John Avanzino (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) who were All-Patriot League selections in 2008. Wilson, who earned a spot on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II first team in addition to being a second team all-league starting pitcher, posted a 3.66 grade-point average for the semester. Allen, a civil engineering major and second team all-league shortstop had a 3.48 GPA, while Avanzino, a first team all-league designated hitter, posted a 3.50 GPA as a political science major. Elsewhere around the league, Holy Cross had 10 honor roll members, Lehigh had eight, Army six and Navy three.
