Bucknell Men Down Army by Widest Margin in School History, 75-25
Feb. 22, 2004
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Matt Quinn scored a game-high 13 points and Bucknell held Army to 25 points or less for the second time this season in a 75-25 rout Sunday at Sojka Pavilion. The 50-point margin was the largest in Bucknell history, surpassing a 49-point win (102-53) over Franklin and Marshall on Jan. 11, 1969. Bucknell (13-12, 9-3) won its seventh straight game and 10th in 11 contests. The Bison pulled into a tie for second place in the Patriot League with Lafayette, which fell 78-73 at Lehigh (10-2) in a first-place battle on Sunday. Army (6-18, 3-9) made only 8 of 45 shots in the game for 17.8 percent. The Black Knights were 3-for-17 in the first half and trailed 41-9 at the break, then shot 5-for-28 in the second period. Only two Travis Owsley 3-pointers in the final 52 seconds prevented Army from breaking the NCAA record for fewest points in a game during the shot clock era (since 1986). Coastal Carolina defeated Georgia Southern 61-21 in 1997. On Jan. 23 at West Point, Bucknell held Army to seven field goals in a 56-23 win. That had been the fewest points allowed by the Bison since 1942. Bucknell played the second half without head coach Pat Flannery on the sideline. Flannery was feeling under the weather during the halftime break and went to a local hospital for precautionary measures. Assistant coach Nathan Davis led the team in the second half.
In its final regular-season home game, Bucknell started all five of its seniors, and that group set the stage for the rout. Six straight points from Jeremiah Bennett and a basket each from Jack Namvou and Davorin Skornik gave the Bison a 10-4 cushion when the regular starters began to check in.
Bennett's final bucket, a layup off a Quinn feed, ignited a 16-0 run. Consecutive 3-pointers from Charles Lee and a long jumper from Donald Brown made it 24-4 with 6:48 to play in the half. Eric Sewell's baseline jumper ended Army's 10:31 scoreless drought. The Bison closed the half on another 16-0 run over the final 4:27, with Quinn tallying eight points in the decisive surge that made it 41-9 at the half. The Bison shot 70.8 percent (17-24) in the first half. Bucknell led by as many as 56 points at 73-17 after senior Roland Webber's 3-pointer with 2:14 to play. Owsley led Army with eight points. The Black Knights missed their first 18 3-point attempts before Owsley's pair in the final minute. Army also shot only 7-for-17 from the free-throw line and had only one assist with 16 turnovers. Bennett tied his career high with nine points and also blocked three shots for Bucknell, while Chris McNaughton added eight points. The Bison shot 60.4 percent for the game and outrebounded Army 41-23. After winning its ninth straight home game and finishing unbeaten (7-0) at home in league play for the first time since 1994-95, Bucknell plays its final two regular-season games on the road, Friday at Holy Cross and Sunday at Colgate. |
