Bison Men's Basketball Tunes Up for Season Opener with Intrasquad Scrimmage

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The countdown clock on the 2009-10 Bucknell men's basketball season opener has dwindled inside one week, and on Saturday afternoon the Bison entertained a few hundred spectators with a spirited 32-minute intrasquad scrimmage. Coach Dave Paulsen mixed and matched lineups and every healthy player on the roster got into the scoring column.

The game started with Darryl Shazier, Bryan Cohen, Stephen Tyree, Joe Willman and Patrick Behan on the floor for the Blue squad, opposite the White lineup of Bryson Johnson, D.J. Rowe, G.W. Boon, Colin Klebon and Enoch Andoch. Mike Muscala was the top sub for the Blue, with Probese Leo and Matt Fiery coming off the bench for the White. Senior forward Zach Evans did not dress due to a minor injury.

 

 

The scrimmage was divided into four eight-minute quarters, and the first period belonged to the defense, as the Blue outscored the white 9-6. The offenses got going in the middle two periods. With the lineups shuffled a bit, the Blue won the second quarter 21-11, and the White captured a wild third quarter 25-19. The sides were reset to the original teams for the fourth period, and the Blue squad really turned up the defense, winning the period 13-1.

All told, the two teams combined for 105 points, shooting 47.3% (36-76) from the field, 34.5% (10-29) from 3-point range and 69.7% (23-33) from the free-throw line.

The top individual scorer was Shazier, the junior point guard, who had 17 points. Shazier was 5-for-8 from the field, 3-for-4 from 3-point range and 4-for-5 from the foul line. He also had three assists and just one turnover.

Boon hit four 3-pointers in nine attempts and finished with 14 points. Tyree, coming back after missing all of last season with a knee injury, looked good with 14 points, four rebounds, four assits and three steals. Tyree was 5-for-7 from the floor and 4-for-6 from the line.

Behan and Cohen also scored in double figures with 11 points apiece. Behan went 5-for-5 from the floor and also had three rebounds. Cohen had a game-high six assists and four rebounds to go with his 11 points.

Willman, one of five freshmen on the roster in 2009-10, was the game's top rebounder with eight. He also scored seven points, going 2-for-4 from the floor and 3-for-3 from the line. Johnson struggled a bit with his shot but did hit a 3-pointer and scored five points. Muscala had two points, three rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots. Klebon finished with two points and four rebounds, and Rowe made two 3-pointers for six points and also had four assists with no turnovers.

Andoh finished with nine points and four rebounds, including a game-high three offensive boards. Rounding out the scoring were Leo with four points and Fiery with two.

The team appeared a bit anxious in the early going and was whistled for a number of traveling violations, leading to a game total of 26 turnovers.

Bucknell opens the season next weekend at the World Vision Basketball Invitational in Providence, R.I. On Friday, Nov. 13 the Bison square off with Mercer, the No. 3 preseason pick in the Atlantic Sun Conference. That will be followed by games against host Providence and Bryant on Saturday and Sunday.
