20th Season

If it happened at an athletic event at Bucknell over the last 43 years, chances are Tommy Thompson had something to do with it.

A Bucknellian in the truest sense of the word, Thompson is in his 20th season at the helm of the Orange and Blue golf program. He has coached four different sports at Bucknell over the last 30-plus years, and surpassed the 1,000 victories as a player, assistant coach and head coach in the spring of 1998 with a dual meet win over Lafayette and Fordham.

A 1960 Bucknell graduate, Thompson returned to his alma mater in 1964 and has participated in over 1,900 athletic contests as a Bison player or coach. In addition to golf, Thompson has coached BU baseball, tennis and junior varsity basketball.

On the links, Thompson has a career dual-match record of 113-27. He has led the Bison to titles in both the Colonial League (1988) and the East Coast Conference (1987). His 1987 team set a school dual-match victory record with a 17-1 mark, and his 1986 team went 13-0 in the dual-match season. This past year, Thompson directed a young squad to its best finish ever in the Patriot League Tournament with second place, just three strokes behind the champion. In addition, Thompson picked up his first Patriot League Coach of the Year honor for the 1999-2000 year.

As head baseball coach from 1967-81, he directed that program to one of the most dramatic turnarounds in Bucknell athletic history, guiding a team that had finished 0-15 in 1968 to the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship and a 15-4 record in 1969.

A native of Kane, PA, Thompson was captain of the Bucknell basketball team and a standout pitcher in baseball. Thompson was a three-year starter in basketball and led the team in scoring his senior year. He also led the baseball team in both hitting and pitching and was named the outstanding athlete in his senior class. He went on to pitch professionally for the Detroit Tigers organization for three seasons. In 1986, he was inducted into the Bucknell Athletic Hall of Fame.

Tommy and his wife, Robynn, have two children, Jennifer, 21, and Todd, 17.
