ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Abbie Valentine shot a one-over-par 72 and four Bucknell players shot 77 or better as the Bison stand in a tie for eighth place after round one of the Navy Spring Invitational at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course.

The Bison, competing for the first time this spring, shot a solid 302 as a team and are tied with Loyola (Md.) in the eighth spot with 18 holes remaining on Sunday. Towson took the first-round lead with a six-over 290, four shots better than Methodist and Binghamton.

Johnson and Wales (295), Navy (298), Villanova (298) and Columbia (299) are also ahead of the Bison, while Rider and Princeton are two strokes back of Bucknell. Other Patriot League teams in the field include Lehigh (306), Lafayette (317) and Colgate (325).

In the individual standings, Valentine is tied for ninth, five shots behind Navy's Billy Hurley, who fired a four-under 67 on his home course. Billy Wingerd of Towson is two-under, and Binghamton's Keith Hendrickson and Villanova's Henry Watson are both one-under.

Also for Bucknell on Saturday, Ben Pellicani shot 76, Tom Lane and Charlie Waddell both shot 77, and Patrick Yingling finished with 79.
