Bucknell Men's Golf Ties for 9th at Navy Invitational
April 4, 2004
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Cold temperatures and severe wind gusts drove scores up in the final round of the Navy Spring Invitational, but Bucknell battled through it to shoot a respectable 321 on Sunday to secure a tie for ninth place in the 23-team field. Tom Lane shot 78 and Charlie Waddell had 79 to lead the Bison in the final round. Patrick Yingling closed with an 81, Abbie Valentine had 83 and Ben Pellicani 90 for the Bucknell, which was competing for the first time this spring. Johnson & Wales won the event with a 36-hole total of 603, six shots better than Loyola (Md.) and Towson. Methodist (612) and host Navy (315) rounded out the top five. Bucknell (623) tied with George Washington and Penn, and the Bison beat three Patriot League rivals in Lehigh (632), Lafayette (642) and Colgate (667). Lane and Valentine each totaled 155 for the tournament, good for a tie for 27th place. Joe Kunz of Binghamton shot 71-72 to win the individual title by one shot over Billy Wingerd of Towson. First-round leader Billy Hurley of Navy struggled in the tough weather conditions, shooting 81 Sunday after a first-round 67.
The Bison return to action on Wednesday at the IUP Invitational.
