Bucknell's Charlie Waddell Named to All-Patriot League Men's Golf Team
May 4, 2004 LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Bucknell freshmen Charlie Waddell (Wilmette, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) earned All-Patriot League honors following his rookie campaign after placing sixth individually at the Patriot League Championships at Colgate's Seven Oaks GC on Apr. 24-25. Waddell helped lead the Bison to a fourth-place team finish in cold and rainy conditions. One of just two freshman to earn all-league honors, which are awarded to the top 10 (and ties) finishers at the Patriot League Championship. He shot rounds of 80, 78 and 75 at the championship for a 54-hole total of 233, which was 10 strokes behind medalist Billy Hurley of Navy but only four shots out of second place. Waddell enjoyed a terrific rookie campaign for the Bison. He tied for the team lead with a stroke average of 77.0 over 11 rounds spanning the fall and spring seasons. He made an incredible splash into the college game, shooting 71-72 to finish tied for third individually in his very first tournament. Those rounds sparked Bucknell to the team title at the Bucknell Invitational, the team's first tournament title in 16 years. Waddell was named the Lewisburg Hotel Bison Athlete of the Week for his efforts. He went on to post top-10 finishes at the Lehigh Don Mershon Classic (T-9th), the Cecil Spadafora IUP Invitational (5th), the Patriot League Championship and the Patriot League/Ivy League Challenge (T-4th). The team's most consistent player, Waddell never shot higher than 80 all season. Billy Hurley of Navy, the Patriot League Championship medalist, was named the league's golfer of the year. He was joined on the all-league team by Navy's Rob Stochel, Army's D.J. Reeves, Scott Manley and Pete Phipps, Lehigh's Alan Borowsky and Patrick McCahill, Holy Cross' Emmit Ferriter and Colgate's Sean Cusick.
Jimmy Ray Clevenger, who led Army to the team title, and Navy's Pat Owen shared coach of the year honors.
