Bison Men's Golf at Cornell Invitational this Weekend
Sept. 20, 2012
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bison men's golf team is in action for the third straight week, traveling to Ithaca, N.Y., for the Cornell Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. The 54-hole event features a 12-team field competing at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course, and the Bison will see Patriot League rivals Colgate and Lafayette. In addition to host Cornell and the three Patriot League squads, defending-champion Binghamton, Brown, Canisius, Fordham, Ottawa, Rider, St. Bonaventure and Siena round out the field. The Cornell Invitational has been an annual event for the Bison under coach Jim Cotner, and they have produced some good results there. Bucknell's best finish at Cornell came in 2009, when Brian Bartow's individual title lifted the Bison to a second-place team finish. Bucknell struggled a bit in this event last season, finishing in 10th place. Juniors Schuyler Stitzer and Thomas Walter are the lone Bison who were in the lineup at Cornell last year that will be returning to Ithaca this season. They will be joined in the starting five by senior Dan Bernard, who is coming off a win at the Bucknell Invitational last week, sophomore Zach Pogust and freshman Luke Edelman. Bernard has been the team's top finisher at both events to start the 2012-13 season. He finished T-10th with rounds of 76-77 at the Colgate Invitational, and then he posted 69-71-76 at home last week to holf off runner-up Edelman by two shots. Bernard's 1-under-par 69 was a career best, and he leads the team with a 73.8 scoring average.
Edelman has been very impressive early in his career. He won the team's 90-hole preseason qualifier, and last week he shot 74-73-71 in that second-place finish. Edelman shot 80-76 in the opener at Colgate, and now he looks to take his strong play on his home course on the road. Edelman's 74.8 average ranks second on the squad. Pogust joins Bernard as the only two Bison who have played in all five tournament rounds this season with every score in the 70s. Pogust is playing very well at the start of the year, and last week he produced a career-best T-5th finish at the Bucknell Invitational, finishing with a 1-over-par 71. Stitzer had a great start at the Bucknell Invitational, opening with 70-71 on Friday. He entered the final round just a shot off the lead, but he finished with an 82 for a T-9th finish. Stitzer, who shot 81-79 at Cornell a year ago, has a 75.4 scoring average. Walter is playing some of the best golf of his career. He held the 54-hole lead at the team qualifier before being sidelined following an appendectomy. Walter missed the opener at Colgate and struggled a bit on the 36-hole day last week, but he closed with a 1-over 71 to secure a T-15th finish. Sophomore Pete Scialabba will also be traveling with the team to Cornell, where he will be in the field as an individual competitor. Scialabba, the runner-up at the 2012 Patriot League Championship, shot 77-77-75 last week and finished T-17th. The Cornell Invitational consists of 36 holes on Saturday and 18 on Sunday. |
