#18 Bucknell vs. Hobart (April 1, 2000)
Dec. 21, 2000 LEWISBURG, PA- The #18 Bucknell men's lacrosse team lost a heartbreaker to Patriot League rival Hobart 16-12 on Saturday, April 1. The Bison trailed by one goal late in the third quarter and by two goals with just under three minutes left in the game. Senior Brad VanNostrand (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) led the Bison offense, scoring three goals, while junior Michael Cheng (Floral Park, NY/Floral Park) and senior Alex Gibson (Baltimore, MD/Loyola) notched two apiece. VanNostrand's final goal cut the lead to two late in the fourth quarter. The game was a back and fourth battle throughout, with a tie score eight times and the lead changing hands four times. The score at halftime was 7-7, the most goals scored against the Herd in the first half all season. Bucknell scored two goals in man-up situations, an area where they had only three previously. The Statesmen were successful on three of seven of their man-up chances, almost equaling the total goals (4) that the Bison's man-up defense had allowed all season. BU was ranked first in the nation, killing off 87.5% of the man-up situations they have faced. An odd occurrence in the fourth quarter led to the Statesmen sealing the victory. A streaker ran across the field after the VanNostrand cut the lead to two with 2:46 to go in the game. The Bison were then assessed a delay of game penalty, giving possession to the Statesmen. Hobart proceeded to hold onto the ball for almost a minute and a half before scoring to increase the lead to three goals with just over a minute to go. This effectively ended the game for the Bison.
