Lacrosse Herd Runs Over Holy Cross 15-1 In Patriot League Opener
March 3, 2001
Scranton, Pa. - The Bucknell men's lacrosse team improved its season record to a perfect 2-0 this afternoon with a decisive 15-1 victory over Patriot League foe, Holy Cross. The Bison, who narrowly missed recording a shutout, were led by the precision shooting of sophomore Kelly Hogue (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning West) with five goals. The Bison, who were coming off a season-opening victory against North Carolina, jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter, 4-0, and never looked back. After two periods of play, the Orange and Blue had recorded nine goals while a stingy defense limited Holy Cross to zero goals and only a hand full of shots. The story of the game was defense as Bucknell shot the ball 51 times and allowed the Crusaders to shoot only 15 times. Senior Greg Neufeld (Floral, Park, N.Y.) ruined Bucknell's bid for a shutout by scoring a goal late in the fourth quarter of the contest for Holy Cross. The scoring barrage began for Bucknell early in the first period when senior Michael Cheng (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park) found the back of the net off a feed from sophomore Andrew "Worthy" Sanders (West Chester, Pa./West Chester). Cheng finished the contest with two goals and three assists. Adding to the Herd's offensive effort were sophomores Dennis Geraghty (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and Andrew Copelan (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) with two tallies each. Tallying his first career goal in the contest for the Bison was freshman Sean Joffe (Westfield, N.J./Westfield), younger brother of Herd alumni, Ed Joffe '99.
The Bison defensive unit had another spectacular afternoon as it scooped up 45 ground balls to Holy Cross's 23 and only allowed one goal in ten extra-man situations for the Crusaders. Combining between the pipes for the victory was sophomore Justin Sussman (Towson, Md./Friends Academy), junior Beau Standish (McLean, Va./Exeter) and freshman Josh Mayer (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) recording five total saves in the victory.
The men's lacrosse team improves to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in conference action with the 15-1 victory over Holy Cross (1-2, 0-1). The Herd will take to the field next when they travel to the University of Maryland on Tuesday, March 6, for a 3:00 p.m. contest versus the Terrapins.
