College Park, Md. - Sophomore John Terracciano (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) tallied two goals in the #13 Bucknell (6-2) men's lacrosse team's attempt at knocking off #1 Maryland (7-0). The Bison hung with the Terrapins for most of the game until late in the third quarter when Maryland scored three goals to give them momentum and an eventual 8-4 victory.

The teams exchanged goals in the first quarter as Terracciano netted the Herd's first two goals before Andrew "Buggs" Combs scored an extra man goal for the 'Terps with :20 left in the period. The Bison were only down by one goal after having had to kill two 1:00 penalties in the first quarter.

Refusing to back down on Maryland's home turf, sophomore Andrew "Worthy" Sanders (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) dodged towards the goal and beat three Terrapin defenders to knot the contest at three goals each. The two teams remained deadlocked at three until Combs scored Maryland's fourth goal of the contest with 1:00 left in the first half to give the #1 team in the country a 4-3 lead going into the locker room.

The Bison came out in the second half with fresh legs and quickly scored an extra man goal at the 8:33 mark to tie the game at 4-4. Sophomore Dennis Geraghty (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) was the recipient of BU's fourth goal as he swooped in to pick up a rebound and put it past the Maryland goalkeeper. The goal was his 25th of the 2001 season. This would be the last time that the game would be tied however as Maryland went on to score four unanswered goals before the final whistle. The Terrapins were led by their top-scorer Combs who finished the game with three goals and an assist. Maryland was held to its lowest offensive output of the season by scoring only eight goals.

Keeping the Bison in the contest was sophomore goalkeeper Justin Sussman (Towson, Md./Friends School) who recorded 14 saves against the high-octane Maryland offense. Also doing the job for Coach Jamieson was junior Brian Loesch (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg) who proved his value as a face-off specialist by beating numerous Terrapins in the center circle. Loesch finished the contest winning 11 out of 12 face-off opportunities.

The Bucknell men's lacrosse team will now prepare for an even bigger contest this coming weekend, Saturday, March 31, versus the Hobart Statesmen. Hobart is currently ranked #12 and face-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Bucknell's East Field.
