Bucknell's Justin Sussman Named PL Men's Lax Defensive Player of the Week
April 7, 2003 LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior goalie Justin Sussman (Towson, Md./Friends), the national leader in save percentage, was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after leading the Bison to two more victories last week. Sussman earned the weekly citation for the second time this season, and Bucknell defenders have garnered the honor in all four weeks so far this spring. Sussman was the defensive player of the week in the first balloting of 2003, and defensive middies Justin Slama and Ryan Goodman have also been honored. A preseason honorable mention All-American, Sussman is enjoying one of his best seasons for the Orange & Blue. Last week he ran his winning streak to five games with a 7-6 victory over then-18th-ranked Villanova and a 12-5 triumph against Patriot League rival Lafayette. Sussman stopped 12 shots against the Wildcats, including a point-blank save on leading scorer Marc Creegan with 2:30 remaining in a one-goal game. He also made 13 saves against Lafayette on Saturday, while allowing only four tallies before departing with seven minutes to play. With the 25-save week Sussman upped his season save percentage to .703. He was the national leader in that category last week and will likely remain at the top when the new rankings are released by the NCAA on Tuesday. He also owns a scintillating 6.19 goals-against average. Sussman also upped his career save total to 527, good for fourth on Bucknell's all-time list and fifth on the Patriot League's all-time chart. He is just four saves shy of third place on the BU list.
Bucknell, ranked 15th this week in the Warrior/Inside Lacrosse media poll and tied for 17th in the USILA coaches' poll, travel to Army for a critical Patriot League road test on Saturday. Sussman is 3-0 lifetime against the Black Knights.
