Chris Cara Named PL Men's Lax Offensive Player of the Week
April 15, 2002 LEWISBURG, Pa. - Just one day after throttling Colgate for three goals and four assists, Bucknell freshman attackman Chris Cara (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford H.S.) has been named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced Monday afternoon. Cara, who also earned the award on March 18, now has 15 points in his last two games - a pair of convincing Patriot League victories over Lafayette (13-7) and Colgate (15-6). For the season he leads Bucknell and the Patriot League with 48 total points on 21 goals and 27 assists. The 27 assists are tied with Army's Tim Pearson for the most in the league this season, and Cara has moved into the top 10 on both the Bucknell and Patriot League single-season assist lists. He now ranks ninth on the Bucknell chart, 10 shy of record-holder Pete VonHoffmann. Cara joins Lehigh's Brad Baker and Lafayette's Jamie Murray in 10th place on the Patriot League single-season list, 12 short of Pearson's mark set last season. Cara's 48 points are tied for ninth on Bucknell's all-time single-season list. He has also tied Pete VonHoffmann's record for points in a season by a freshman. VonHoffmann had 17 goals and 31 assists as a rookie in 1976. In Bucknell's 15-6 victory over Colgate this past Sunday, Cara set the tone early by picking up a goal and two assists as the Bison raced to a 3-0 lead after one period. After Colgate trimmed a 9-1 halftime deficit to 9-3 with two quick goals in the third quarter, Cara ended any hopes of a Raider comeback by scoring twice in 54 seconds to make it 11-3.
Bucknell has won two straight games to stand at 5-6 overall, 4-1 in Patriot League play. The Bison are currently in a tie for first with Hobart atop the conference standings. The Bison are off until Tuesday, Apr. 23 at Penn State.
