BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- According to the official NCAA RPI ratings index report, released to the Patriot League at 11:15 p.m. Saturday, Hobart has the highest RPI among the three teams tied for the 2002 PL title and will be awarded the League's automatic bid to the national championship tournament. Exact RPI numbers were not available Saturday night.

The official announcement of who, when and where the Hobart will play when the tournament opens next weekend will be made Sunday at 6 p.m.

The Patriot League finished its regular-season Saturday with a 15-6 Army victory at Lehigh. That gave the Black Knights (8-6, 5-1 PL) a piece of the 2002 League crown with Bucknell (6-7, 5-1 PL) and Hobart (6-7, 5-1 PL). All three teams will share the team title for the 2002 season. It is Bucknell's third straight Patriot League title and fourth overall.

However, the League's first three tiebreaking procedures to determine the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament did not break the deadlock, forcing the League to go to its final tiebreaker -- the NCAA RPI rating index -- as decided by the coaches in 2000.

It is Hobart's second NCAA Tournament appearance representing the Patriot League in the last three years. The Statesmen also tied Bucknell for the 2000 League championship and advanced to the national tournament based on a head-to-head victory over the Bison.

The NCAA RPI is similar, but not the same, as some of the ratings indexes used by various lacrosse magazines and websites. This is the first time the League needed the RPI rating index to determine its NCAA representative.
