Bucknell's Haire, Winter Earn Honorable Mention All-America Recognition
May 21, 2009
LEWISBURG, Pa. - For the first time in 13 years the Bucknell men's lacrosse team has produced two All-Americans in the same season, as senior defenseman Billy Haire (Darien, Conn./Darien) and junior attackman Austin Winter (Boonton Twp., N.J./Mountain Lakes) both earned Honorable Mention All-America honors from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA). Winter was honored for the second straight season, making him Bucknell's fifth two-time All-American. Two days after being named to the South roster for the USILA North-South All-Star game, Haire earns his first career All-America certificate. He was named a Preseason Honorable Mention All-American by Inside Lacrosse, and he backed up that claim with a terrific senior season that culminated with Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year honors. Haire earned his third straight All-Patriot League citation in 2009 with a First Team mention. Bucknell's defensive stopper, Haire never missed a start in four years at Bucknell. He was a two-time conference defensive player of the week in 2009, and he led a defense and man-down defense that ranked among the national leaders. A team co-captain, Haire was second on the team this season with 52 ground balls, and his 166 career ground balls rank second in school history behind only Ryan Goodman (175 from 2002-05). Haire is the first Bison defenseman to earn All-America honors since Kevin Smithies in 2002. Winter was Bucknell's leading point-producer for the third consecutive year. In 2009 he compiled 49 points on 17 goals and 32 assists. He had multiple points in all but two of his 15 games this season. He had a season-high six points against Lehigh and also had four five-point games, the last coming against Navy in the Patriot League championship game when he had two goals and three assists.
His 32 assists were one shy of his career high and marked the eighth-highest total in program history. His career assist total now stands at 94, which ranks third in school history behind only the Peter von Hoffmann and Chris Cara, who both produced 138. Winter's final point of the year gave him 150 for his career, a total that already ranks fifth all-time at Bucknell with a year still left to play. Winter is the first Bucknell two-time All-American since Cara in 2004 and 2005. The other Bison to repeat as All-Americans were Justin Zackey in 1993 and 1994, von Hoffmann in 1977 and 1979, and Lou Kissling in 1970 and 1971. Bucknell has never had a three-time All-American. Bucknell has now had 21 All-Americans since the program's inception in 1968. Only three times previously have the Bison claimed two All-Americans in the same season: Hugh Donovan and Jon Methven in 1996, von Hoffmann and Tom Sanders in 1979, and Ed Farver and Jim McKee in 1969. |
