Bucknell's Goodman, Sussman Named to Verizon Academic All-District At-Large Team
May 22, 2003 LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell lacrosse standouts Ryan Goodman (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Dwight Englewood) and Justin Sussman (Towson, Md./Friends School) were named Thursday to the Verizon Academic All-District At-Large Team. Goodman was named to the 10-man first team, making him eligible for the national Academic All-America team, while Sussman was one of 10 selected on the second team. District voting is conducted by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Candidates must have a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or key reserve. The at-large squad encompasses nearly two dozen NCAA-sponsored sports, lacrosse included, that do not have their own Academic All-America voting. One of only two lacrosse players named to the men's at-large first team, Goodman has made a quick impact in only two years at Bucknell. The sophomore was a key member of Bucknell's Patriot League co-championship team in 2003. He was a key faceoff man, winning nearly 49 percent of his draws, in addition to being one of the team's top short-stick defensive midfielders. Goodman was the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on March 31 after winning 10 faceoffs and playing stellar defense in Bucknell's crucial 8-7 league victory over Hobart. Off the field, Goodman has had an even greater impact on the Bucknell and local communities. An electrical engineering major with a 3.76 GPA, Goodman this spring was the recipient of Bucknell's Emerging Leader Award, which is presented to a first or second-year student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership potential. Goodman takes part in the Best Buddies program at Bucknell, which pairs a student to a person in need of friendship and assistance. For two years, Goodman has developed a strong bond with a mentally disabled Lewisburg man named J.J. A member of the Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, Goodman is involved in the Building on Foundations community service organization, and he is a coordinator in Bucknell's freshman orientation program. This summer, Goodman will serve an internship for the school's Institute for Leadership in Technology and Management. The internship involves both engineering and management students who work on actual projects for Fortune 1000 firms. Sussman was one of the top senior goalies in the nation in 2003. He posted a 9-4 record with 6.88 goals-against average, and his .664 save percentage ranked second nationally, just .003 behind the leader. Sussman repeated as Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team all-conference selection, and he was a three-time player of the week pick.
Sussman, who led Bucknell to at least a share of the Patriot League title in each of his four seasons, allowed four goals or less six times in 2003. Sussman is Bucknell's winningest all-time goalie (30) and ranks third all-time in saves (572) and fourth in career save percentage (.628). Off the field, he is a business management major with a 3.25 GPA. He has been a member of the Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Sussman graduated from Bucknell on May 18. Joining Goodman on the at-large first team were American swimmer Seth Bell, Lafayette tennis player Ryan Collins, Georgetown lacrosse player Brant Gresham, Navy rifleman James Kauber, Penn State volleyball player Zeljko Koljesar, Duquesne tennis player Micael Lopez-Acevedo, Loyola (Md.) tennis player John McConnell, Princeton wrestler Greg Parker and UMBC swimmer Karl Strauss. Joining Sussman on the second team were American swimmer Ethan Bassett, Johns Hopkins lacrosse player Bobby Benson, Penn State tennis player Clint Keithley, Penn State volleyball player Keith Kowal, Lock Haven wrestler Mike Maney, Saint Francis (Pa.) volleyball player Chad O'Brien, Princeton hockey player Scott Prime, West Virginia rifleman Wade Tyner and Duquesne golfer Tom Wears.
Bucknell ranks third among all Division I institutions (behind Nebraska and Notre Dame) in total Academic All-Americans produces with 104 since 1970.
