Bucknell's Nick Sciubba Finishes as NCAA Leader in Two Statistical Categories
May 31, 2007 LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's lacrosse goalie Nick Sciubba (Sea Cliff, N.Y./Salisbury School), in his first year with the team after transferring from Massachusetts, finished the 2007 season as the NCAA Division I leader in both save percentage (.641) and goals-against average (6.24). With the national championship game held earlier this week, the NCAA released the final official statistics on Thursday. Sciubba proved to be one of the league's most significant newcomers in 2007. He opened the year as Bucknell's No. 2 goalie, but he came off the bench to help save the day against Hobart in the second game of the season and never relinquished the starting role. He allowed six goals or less in all but three of his appearances and had more saves than goals allowed in every outing but one. An All-Patriot League Second Team selection this season, Sciubba's .641 save percentage is the ninth-best in school history, and his 6.24 goals-against average is the second-best mark since that statistic began to be recorded in 1992. As a team, Bucknell ranked second nationally in scoring defense, allowing a mere 6.33 goals per game. The Bison trailed only Princeton, which surrendered 6.21 goals per game. Bucknell freshman attackman Austin Winter (Boonton Twp., N.J./Mt. Lakes) also appeared near the top of the national leaderboard. Winter, the 2007 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, ranked eighth in Division I in assists per game (1.93) and 24th in points per game (3.27). Sciubba is the first Bucknell men's lacrosse player to lead the nation in a major statistical category since Chris Cara won the national scoring title in 2004 and 2005. The Bison finished the 2007 campaign with an 11-4 record, falling one victory shy of the school single-season record.
