First-Half Goal by Ferraro Helps Bucknell Men's Soccer to 1-1 Tie Against Northern Illinois in Season Opener
Aug. 31, 2007
CHICAGO, Ill. - Just over a minute after Northern Illinois scored the first goal of the game late in the first half, Bucknell's Anthony Ferraro (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) answered with a game-tying goal as the Bison men's soccer team played to a 1-1 overtime tie with Northern Illinois Friday afternoon at Loyola Soccer Park in the season opener for both teams. The contest was the first of the four-game Northwestern Lakeside Classic, which will feature Bucknell playing No. 14 Northwestern on Sunday. After playing nearly 43 minutes beneath a blazing sun without a score from either team, the first half finished with a flourish. Drew Jeskey scored first at the 42:52 mark to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Ferraro then answered just 64 seconds later when the Bison stole the ball, Justin Wolf (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) passed the ball to Ferraro and he shot from about 30 yards out and sneaked the ball inside the post. It was the fourth goal of his career. Senior co-captain Joey Kuterbach (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) made eight saves for Bucknell as he upped his career total to 169. His counterpart, Joe Zimka, who recorded 11 shutouts last year, stopped five shots. The match, which was moved to the campus of Loyola-Chicago earlier in the week due to construction delays on Northwestern's facility, was played evenly as Northern Illinois held a slight 16-15 edge in shots and a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. With the tie, Bucknell (0-0-1) continued its streak of not losing its first game of the season since 2003. The Bison are now 1-0-3 over that four-year span. Bucknell will wrap up play at the Northwestern Lakeside Classic Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. (Eastern) against host Northwestern, which is ranked 14th in the country. The Wildcats defeated Patriot League foe Colgate 3-0 Friday afternoon.
