Bucknell Men's Soccer Falls Seconds into Overtime to No. 14 Northwestern, 2-1
Sept. 2, 2007
EVANSTON, Ill. - Matt Eliason scored just 19 seconds into overtime after collecting a turnover as No. 14 Northwestern defeated Bucknell 2-1 in men's soccer Saturday afternoon during the final match of the Northwestern Lakeside Classic. Mark Schmiegel (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) netted the lone goal for the Bison, who saw starting their goalkeeper, Joey Kuterbach (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood), leave the game in the first half. The Bison, who have been very competitive when playing ranked opponents during head coach Brendan Nash's nine-year tenure, went up 1-0 in the 34th minute when Schmiegel took a through kick from Conor O'Brien (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and put it in the goal near the far post. It was Schmiegel's fourth career goal, and his second in his last four matches dating back to last year. It was also the fourth assist of O'Brien's two-year Bison career. Less than 10 minutes later, in the 41st minute, Northwestern scored a goal against an empty net as Kuterbach collided with another player and was knocked out. While he was on the ground, the Wildcats' Carl Pett put the ball into the net to tie the score before the referee blew his whistle to stop play. Kuterbach, who had made one save, played every second of Bucknell's 23 games last year, but was relieved by sophomore Will Byrne (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna) for the final 49:25. Facing a nationally ranked team, Byrne made two saves in his collegiate debut. Neither team scored in the second half, although Northwestern held a heavy 8-1 advantage in shots after intermission. The first half shot total had been even at six, but the Wildcats ended with a 15-7 edge. Northwestern also held a lopsided 13-1 advantage in corner kicks.
A mere seconds into overtime, Eliason ended the contest as Northwestern, which defeated Patriot League foe Colgate 3-0 Friday, improved to 2-0-0. Bucknell, which tied Northern Illinois 1-1 Friday and has gone to overtime in five of its last six games dating to last year's postseason, fell to 0-1-1. The Bison did place seniors Joe Mellott (Highland, Md./Mount St. Joseph) and Justin Wolf (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) on the All-Tournament Team. Both veterans had solid showings on the opening weekend of the 2007 campaign, and for Wolf it was a homecoming of sorts as he is from the Chicago area. The Bison continue their difficult early season schedule where they play five of their first six matches on the road next Saturday when they play at Duquesne. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. |
