Kumah's Golden Goal Lifts Bucknell Men's Soccer Past Marquette, 2-1
Oct. 13, 2009
![]() LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman CK Kumah (Accra, Ghana/The Hotchkiss School) scored with two minutes remaining in the second overtime period to send the Bucknell men's soccer team to its 10th victory of the season, 2-1 over Marquette on Tuesday afternoon at Valley Fields. Another first-year player, Brendan Burgdorf (Westfield, N.J./The Pingry School), scored the other goal for the Bison, who have now won five in a row. Including their 1-0 win over Syracuse at the Mayor's Cup in Oneonta, N.Y., on Sept. 13, the Bison are now 2-0 this season and 37-26-3 all-time against teams from the Big East. At 10-3 on the season, Bucknell has its best 13-game record since the 2002 team started 10-2-1. The Bison are currently one of only four teams in the nation with 10 or more wins. No. 1 Akron and No. 8 Monmouth both have 11, while UMBC also has 10. It is the 11th time in program history that Bucknell has reached double-figure wins. Burgdorf's fifth goal of the season and third in his last three games staked Bucknell to a lead in the 65th minute. Kumah drew an assist on the play when Burgdorf took his pass, dribbled left to right across the top of the penalty area and shot back to his left just past outstretched keeper Keenan Flynn. The Bison were less than four minutes from their seventh 1-0 win of the season, but Andrew Krynski knocked in a headed pass from Michael Alfano with just 3:56 to play. Keeper Tommy Caso (Phoenix, Md./McDonogh) tipped Calum Mallace's shot over the crossbar with two seconds left in regulation, sending the game to overtime. Bucknell played a school-record eight overtime matches last season but had yet to play any in 2009. Caso was called upon for a save on Krynski just 90 seconds into extra time, but that would be the Golden Eagles' only shot in either overtime period. With about four minutes left in the second overtime, Sean King (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) sent a shot wide, then two minutes later Kumah hustled to a loose ball on the end line to the left of the goal and from a tough angle fired a shot off the right post and in to end the game. Kumah, who scored the game's only goal in Saturday's 1-0 win over Holy Cross, gave the Bison their first overtime victory on the road since their 2006 NCAA Tournament win at George Mason. With five goals and 11 points this season, Burgdorf is now tied with Colgate's Mike Reidy for the top spot in both categories among all Patriot League freshmen. Kumah is not far behind with three goals and eight points. With the loss Marquette fell to 2-7-3 on the season. The Golden Eagles have played better than that record, however. They have ties against No. 5 South Florida and No. 9 Louisville and a 1-0 loss to No. 9 UC Irvine, and they were coming off a scoreless tie on the road against Seton Hall. It was a solid victory for Bucknell, which made a quick Fall Break trip, traveling in and out of Milwaukee in a span of 24 hours. Marquette finished with a 15-10 shot advantage and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Caso made five saves for the Bison, while Flynn had two for the Golden Eagles. Head coach Brendan Nash earned his 99th career victory on Tuesday. He will go for 100 on Saturday when his Bison return to Patriot League play with a 1 p.m. road game against Army.
