Bucknell Men's Soccer Blanks Army 3-0 for Brendan Nash's 100th Career Win
Oct. 17, 2009
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Conor O'Brien (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./St. Anthony's) got Bucknell started with his 10th goal of the season and freshman Brendan Burgdorf (Westfield, N.J./The Pingry School) had a goal and an assist to lead the Bison to their sixth straight win, 3-0 at Army on Saturday at Clinton Field. The victory was also No. 100 for Bucknell head coach Brendan Nash. Bucknell is now 11-3 on the season, its best record after 14 games since the 1974 team was 12-0-2. That 1974 squad finished the season 12-1-2, with the only loss coming to Philadelphia Textile in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bison entered the weekend as one of only six Division I teams with 10 or more wins, and their six-game winning streak is the team's longest since 1983. Now 3-1 in Patriot League play, Bucknell can move into a share of first place atop the conference table if 3-0 American falls at Navy later on Saturday evening. At chilly West Point, Bucknell had to dodge a few dangerous flurries from Army early in the contest, then controlled play the rest of the way. Bucknell finished with a 25-5 shot advantage, and four of Army's five shots came in the first 14 minutes of play. Tommy Caso (Phoenix, Md./McDonogh) was required to make saves on three of those shots but was untested over the game's final 75 minutes. The Bison began to buzz around the 20-minute mark, and soon after O'Brien hit the crossbar, one of three Bucknell shots to strike the framework in the game. The Bison finally broke through in the 39th minute, when O'Brien worked his way up the middle of the field and passed wide to Burgdorf. The freshman returned the pass to O'Brien, who scored inside the left post for a 1-0 lead.
O'Brien became the first Bucknell player to score 10 goals in a season since Scott Visnic had 12 in 2003. The goal was the 25th of his career, and he became only the eighth player in program history to reach the 70-point mark in a career. The Bison held on to the 1-0 lead into the second half when they tacked on two insurance goals. Burdgorf made a nifty play on the first. After Travis Rand (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) sent a throw-in forward, Burgdorf outran the Army defense to the end line, tightroped the line as he walked in on goal, and lobbed a shot over keeper Nick Alexander's head for his sixth goal of the season. Pending action later in the evening, Burgdorf took over the Patriot League goal-scoring lead among freshmen. Tommy McCabe (Sarasota, Fla./Cardinal Mooney) finished the scoring in the 71st minute with his first goal of the season. Freshman Josh Plump (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) intercepted an Army throw-in and sent a pass across the box to McCabe, who one-timed it home with his left foot. Alexander made nine saves for the Black Knights, who dropped their 11th straight game after winning on opening night. Caso finished with three saves. Plump led all players with seven shot attempts, two of which hit posts. Bucknell, which is ranked third in the Mid-Atlantic Region this week, now has seven shutouts this season. This was the first by a score other than 1-0, however. Bucknell returns to action on Wednesday night, hosting No. 24 Penn State at Emmitt Field. The game will be broadcast live on Bison Vision at BucknellBison.com. |
