Bucknell Men's Soccer Defeated by Lafayette, 2-1
Oct. 27, 2007
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshmen Ross Liberati (Warwick, Md./Tower Hill) and Tommy McCabe (Sarasota, Fla./Cardinal Mooney) combined for a goal with 4:16 remaining, but it was a little too late as the Bucknell men's soccer team lost 2-1 to Lafayette Saturday night in front of an enthusiastic crowd of 858 at Varsity Soccer Field. The Leopards' B.J. Glenn netted a pair of first-half goals to stake Lafayette to a 2-0 lead. Glenn put Lafayette up 1-0 at the 7:46 mark with his third goal of the season. He took a pass from Corey Dempsey just past midfield and won a footrace with a Bison defender. Entering the box one step ahead of the Bucknell defensive player, Glenn fired a shot past Bison goalie Joey Kuterbach (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) in a one-on-one situation. At the 33:03 mark Glenn scored again, this time on a pass from Chip Aronica. Aronica's pass led Glenn a little bit and both Glenn and a Bison defender overran the pass just outside the right side of the box. Glenn reversed direction first to gather the loose ball and found the back of the net for his second goal of the night. Neither team scored again until Bucknell cut the lead to 2-1 on a goal from Liberati, his second of the season, with 4:16 left. McCabe picked up his first career point by serving the ball into the box, where Liberati headed it past goal Philip Nelson, who entered the game leading the Patriot League in goals-against average (0.50). Kuterbach tallied five saves for the Bison, while Nelson had four for the Leopards. Kuterbach, who now has 216 saves in his career, moved into 10th place on the Bucknell career list. He is now just one stop behind Paul Green for ninth, and four behind eighth-place Ted Peterson.
While the Bison were able to muster just the one goal, they had plenty of opportunities to score, tallying 16 shots. Additionally, Bucknell attempted seven corner kicks compared to just 12 shots and two corners for Lafayette.
The Leopards were whistled for 21 total fouls, while the Bison picked up just four. In fact, Lafayette had more fouls in each half than Bucknell did for the entire game. With Saturday's loss, Bucknell (6-5-4 overall, 2-2-1 Patriot League) fell into fifth place in the Patriot League standings, just one point behind Lafayette (7-2-5, 2-1-2 PL), which rests in fourth place. The loss also halted a five-game unbeaten streak at Varsity Soccer Field for the Bison, while the Leopards remained undefeated on the road this year (1-0-4). Bucknell will step out of Patriot League play for the final time on Wednesday, Oct. 31, when it travels to Newark, N.J., to face NJIT. Kickoff for the contest is slated for 7 p.m. The Bison and Highlanders have tied each of the last two years. |
