Bucknell Men's Soccer Continues Season-Opening Road Trip Saturday at Duquesne
Sept. 6, 2007
LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's soccer team will continue its stretch where it plays five of its first six matches on the road Saturday evening when it travels to Duquesne. Kickoff for the non-conference contest is slated for 7 p.m. The Bison enter the match with an 0-1-1 record after going to overtime in both games at the Northwestern Lakeside Classic last weekend. Bucknell tied Northern Illinois and lost on a goal just 19 seconds into overtime against then-No. 14 Northwestern. Bucknell Men's Soccer Notebook Bucknell Notes - Five of Bucknell's last six games have gone to overtime, including both this year. The Bison are 1-1-3 in those matches with the lone win coming against George Mason in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last year. Two of the ties came during the Patriot League Tournament, which Bucknell won by defeating both Lehigh and Lafayette in penalty kick shootouts last November. - Saturday's contest marks the third consecutive game away from home for Bucknell to start the 2007 season. It is the third time in the last four years the Bison will play at least their first three matches outside of Lewisburg. In 2004, Bucknell opened the campaign 0-3-1 away from home, while in 2005 they were 3-1-0 playing in the James Madison Invitational and Loyola (Md.) Classic. - Junior Anthony Ferraro netted Bucknell's first goal of the season last Friday against Northern Illinois. Just over a minute before halftime, Ferraro's tally tied the score at 1-1, which is the way the contest ended. Ferraro, who registered two goals last year, now has four scores in his career.
- Junior Mark Schmiegel gave the Bison a 1-0 lead in the first half of Sunday's match at No. 14 Northwestern when he tallied off an assist from Conor O'Brien. It was the fourth goal of Schmiegel's career, and his first since the game-winning score in overtime against George Mason in the first round of last year's NCAA Tournament. - Senior co-captain Justin Wolf registered his ninth career assist on Ferraro's goal against Northern Illinois. That places Wolf just four assists shy of breaking into Bucknell's all-time top-10 list. Steve Goldenring, who had 13 assists from 1979-82, currently holds down 10th place on that list. - Seniors Joe Mellott and Wolf were both named to the All-Tournament Team for their performances at the Northwestern Lakeside Classic last weekend. - With its loss to Northwestern on Sunday, Bucknell equaled its loss total from all of last September. The Bison went a sparkling 7-1-2 during September 2006 and were a combined 12-3-4 in September in 2005 and 2006. - Senior goalkeeper Joey Kuterbach made eight saves in the season opener against Northern Illinois last Friday. He then stopped one more shot against Duquesne before leaving the contest. He played all 2195:16 in goal for the Bison last year and has started 25 consecutive matches. Kuterbach now has 170 career saves, just 44 shy of breaking into the Bison career top-10 list. About Duquesne - Senior Travis MacKenzie, an NSCAA All-Region choice in 2005 and 2006, was named Third Team All-America by College Soccer News in the preseason. He was the team's leading scorer last year, netting six goals and dishing out eight assists. Up Next |
