Bucknell Men's Swimming & Diving Defeats Lehigh 164-134 in Final Dual of 2007-08

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Bucknell men's swimming and diving team wrapped up its 2007-08 dual meet schedule with a 164-134 victory over Lehigh on Saturday afternoon. With the win against the Mountain Hawks (2-7, 2-2 PL) the Bison improve to 5-1 against Patriot League foes and 6-2 overall, the best duals record by the Orange and Blue since the 2000-01 season when the squad finished with a 7-2 mark. Sophomore Luke Trafton (Bath, Maine/Morse) was a double winner for Bucknell taking first in the 1,000 free with a time of nine minutes, 43.87 seconds, and the 500 free, which he completed in 4:42.36. Trafton also scored in the 200 fly, taking third in 1:59.25. The Bison claimed the top two spots in both breaststroke events as senior Bradford Bennett (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) was first to the wall in the 100 breast (58.48) followed by classmate Joseph Metcalf (Knoxville, Tenn./Phillips Exeter Academy (N.H.)) (59.75). In the 200 breast, it was Metcalf in first (2:09.22) and Bennett second (2:11.88). For a the third time in the last three meets, sophomore Daniel Fletcher (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) was victorious in the 200 back, reaching the wall in a career-best 1:54.76. He headed up a one-two-three Bucknell sweep in the event as freshman Gonzalo DeLeon (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) placed second with a time of 1:55.95 and sophomore David Iselin (Potomac, Md./Churchill) finished third (1:56.73). Fletcher also posted runner-up showings in the 200 IM (1:58.22) and the 200 free (1:44.52).
In the 100 back, junior Mark Kawczenski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Hanover Area) won with a time of 53.11 and DeLeon took third in 54.87.
Junior Jeffrey Manning (Bringhurst, Ind./Carroll Jr./Sr. High) recorded a career-best score of 298.35 to claim first in three-meter diving and was the runner-up on the one-meter board with a mark of 261.07. Senior John Peterman (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) placed second in both the 50 free (21.08) and the 100 free (47.09), while finishing fourth in the 200 free (1:45.99). Sophomore Ben Leboza (Green Oaks, Ill./Libertyville) came in second in the 500 free with a time of 4:47.77 and was third in the 200 free (1:44.64), rounding out the top individual finishers for the Orange and Blue. The Bison were victorious in one of two relay events as Kawczenski, Bennett, senior Grant Steadman (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Fletcher won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:35.17. Bucknell will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 2, when several members of the squad will compete in the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md. |
